NH GOP Chair comes to Gilford
And yes, he did speak about his 10 reasons to be optimistic! I just got the chance to read The Gilford Steamer's and saw the media's take on the meeting, and on Fergus Cullen himself:
Some might think it is odd that the chairman of the Republican Party in New Hampshire would come to a little town like Gilford to speak to a crowd of very few, but for Fergus Cullen that is just part of his job, and, after all, Gilford is his hometown.
Cullen was raised in Gilford and graduated from its school system in 1994. He went on to Yale College and then earned a master's in public administration from Harvard Business School. Since then he has served on many political campaigns serving in such positions as political director, financial director, deputy press secretary and deputy campaign director. His current elected position allows him to use all those skills. Cullen manages an office, fund raises and speaks to crowds looking to form republican groups. He is the second youngest republican state chairman in the country at 35 and got interested in politics very young as well.
"People get into politics because they believe in policy," said Cullen, "and that the ideas or groups that win make a difference."Read the rest!
Cullen gave an example of education funding as an
issue that causes people to get involved in politics. Cullen said his
initial interest in politics came when he was in high school and
through the encouragement of his teachers he realized he could make a
difference.
"As a young person I could get involved," said Cullen. "I realized that I could make changes by supporting like-minded candidates and if you are good you get rewarded, even as a young person."
Cullen not only got interested in politics in high school, but was a member of three championship track teams. He now coaches cross country at Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro, continuing his interest in running. Along with his running accomplishments and interests Cullen is a member of the 4,000 Foot Club, which means he has climbed all 48 peaks in New Hampshire.
"There is something about long term goals in running,' said Cullen. "When you prepare for a marathon you have to start six or seven months ahead."
Cullen said that this is the same in the political arena where one has to plan in advance and set long-term goals instead of waiting for immediate gratification. Cullen credits this to the teachers and people he had around him when he lived in Gilford and setting running or cross country goals.
"I really felt like I was a turtle on a fence post," said Cullen. "I didn't get there without the help of people who cared about me and supported me."
Some of those supporters were Rhetta Colon and Scott Hutchinson, who helped Cullen hone his writing skills and since those years he has written over fifty articles about New Hampshire politics. Cullen has been published in the Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe and had a column with the Union Leader newspaper. He has been a guest on local television and radio shows talking about politics.
Adding to the mix, Cullen owns small business, CertaPro, a contracting company that he balances with his coaching and political duties. The business has grown greatly since Cullen took over and has a 96 percent referral rate for satisfied customers.
"It's a full plate, but it's all good, said Cullen.
Cullen most recently came to Gilford to speak to the newly formed Republican group in Gilford and talked about the 10 things Republicans should be optimistic about this coming year. He speaks to groups like this all over New Hampshire but definitely enjoys coming to Gilford.
"I still go park at the library in Gilford when I can," said Cullen. "I'll go running along the mountain road and every time someone will beep and wave because they recognize me, and that's really nice."

Dear Gilford Republics,
I would like to introduce a blog that I and Dr. Jim Faux have created for the New Hampshire Republicans. The site is called, nhfacts.com Now that the primary has past, we are going to concentrate on New Hampshire elections until we get back to the general election period. We have opened our site to Senator Sununu, candidates for the 2nd Congressional District, and want anyone running for the House or Senate or the NH Delegation to DC to know they have a place to submit information about their candidacy. We would greatly appreciate it if you would place a link to our blog on your site.
If you have anything you would like placed on the blog, please contact myself Marilyn Huston - mhuston@ne.rr.com or 352-3302.
Warmest Regards,
Marilyn
