Party Lines: The E-Newsletter of the New Hampshire Republican Party

August 14th, 2008

QUICK HITS FROM THE CHAIRMAN

OK, I'LL ASK:  If a nationally prominent Republican did what John Edwards has admitted to, would it get the same level of media coverage?

IMPRESSIVE CANDIDATES
:  I was one of the crowd of 130 people watching the First CD debate between Jeb Bradley and John Stephen in Ossipee on Monday night, and I have to say both of them were outstanding.  Look out, CSP (who was recently rated among the five incumbents most likely to be defeated this year by Politico)!

Congrats to Henry Mock and the Carroll County GOP for putting on a great event.

OUTSTANDING REGIONAL COMMITTEE
:  Also on Monday, Councilor Ray Burton and I had the honor of doing the ribbon cutting to open the Pemi-Baker Valley GOP's headquarters in Plymouth.  Omer Ahern, Henry Ahern, Lud Flower and the whole Pemi-Baker gang have done a model job of re-starting a defunct town committee, and now they have even put together the wherewithal to open and fund a headquarters to support our candidates.  If there isn't a town committee in your community but you have the iniative and leadership to start one, contact tom@nhgop.org and we will help you get the ball rolling.

LET'S GIVE 'EM SOMETHIN' TO TALK ABOUT:  Bonnie Raitt's got some good licks.  It's her left-wing, blame America first politics I can do without.  But there was Raitt in Concord this week doing a concert to raise money for Jeanne Shaheen.  Some of us recall that back in 2000, when sanctions was the extent of our opposition to Saddam Hussein's regime, Raitt signed a letter in the New York Times blaming the US, not Hussein, for causing the deaths "of over one million Iraqis, mostly children under five."  Does Shaheen share Raitt's blame America first mindset?

AND THE GOLD MEDAL FOR FLIP-FLOPS GOES TO:
Jeanne Shaheen, who got elected governor on a pledge against broad-based taxes but who then signed the statewide property tax into law and proposed a 2.5 percent sales tax and a capital gains tax.  JUDGES' SCORES:

Ability To Break A Major Election Year Promise: 9.5
Willingness To Saddle Working Families With An Oppressive Tax Burden: 10
Reckless Disregard For New Hampshire's Economy: 10

STATE CONVENTION SEPT 28:  Candidates for office and for delegate please note: The state convention is scheduled for Sunday, September 28, at 1:00 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy in Derry.  Details TBA after the primary elections.  Football fans can relax; the Patriots have their bye week.

HUMOR:  State Rep. Steve Pelkey is a featured "difference maker" in this funny clip from The Colbert Report.

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED

As of today there are just 82 short days until Election Day and that means the Granite State will soon be flooded with busloads of Union workers, college students and Hollywood liberals who will try and influence New Hampshire voters with out of touch values in hopes of gaining a Democrat victory in November. We cannot allow that to happen.

Please take the time today to contribute $82 or whatever you can afford to help return New Hampshire to responsible governance and fiscal restraint.

The Democrats will continue to receive money and man power from Unions and Hollywood liberals and with just 80 days till Election Day, your contribution of $82 or whatever you can afford means more now than ever.

VOLUNTEER FOR VICTORY

Become a part of our team of dedicated volunteers and help us reach out to thousands of voters across the state on a weekly basis. Any hour that you can spare is one hour closer to victory in November!

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT

Greg Knytych is a 47 year old husband and father of two daughters. Originally from Arizona, Greg's wife is from Belmont, NH. After meeting in a small Northern Arizona town, Greg and his wife married and moved to Laconia in 1978. As a member of the Army, Greg was forced to move away from New Hampshire but would eventually return to Laconia and was his presence was immediately felt in the community as he was very active with his daughter's Girl Scouts groups and is currently the Vice-President of the Lou Athanas Youth Basketball League. Yielding the call to public service, Greg successfully ran for City Councilor in Ward 1 of Laconia which he describes as a "tough job but I enjoy meeting the constituents and helping to address their concerns. I look forward to that same joy as a State Senator."

Why asked why he was running, Greg had this to say, "The number one issue is the fiscal irresponsibility running rampant in our current Legislature. I am running because of the impact I feel in my property tax bill and the cost shifting I see as a City Councilor in Laconia. The spending spree has to stop and there has to be more fiscal responsibility in Concord. There are also the laws that were either passed or attempted that limit the individual rights that we hold so dear. The over-regulation and mandates on health insurance that limits competition and increases the cost of doing business in this state has to change. We need Free-Market solutions with personal responsibility that will lead to a business friendly climate.

My opponent (Kathleen Sgambati – D) was the prime sponsor of the omnibus bill known as HB2, which changed the responsibilities for payment of the various Medicaid/Medicare programs – a bill that increased state spending by 17.5% which subsequently shifted the burden of paying for our current deficit to our children and grandchildren. We also need to tackle economic development, energy development and common sense regulations on industry."

Greg promises to "fight to protect the taxpayer's wallet and restore the family values we know and love."

Be sure to check out Greg's website and PolitickerNH's profile on Greg.

SHAHEEN WATCH

During Jeanne Shaheen's time as Governor, she vetoed bipartisan education reform efforts, blocked efforts to get rid of bad teachers, and the state's high school dropout rate was at twenty-five percent.

Jeanne Shaheen: The Education Governor Fails New Hampshire Kids
When Jeanne Shaheen was elected Governor, she "declared herself the 'education Governor.'"

But Jeanne Shaheen let New Hampshire down as Governor and her performance earned her near failing grades.

Failing to Improve NH Schools

Education Week Magazine gave the state of New Hampshire the grade of "D" on improving teacher quality.

As Governor, Jeanne Shaheen blocked efforts to get rid of bad teachers.

Dismissing Accountability

Shaheen vetoed a bill that would have established criteria for measuring school performance standards.

Dropping Out and Giving Up
According to a study by the New Hampshire Center for Public Policy released in 2002, "Approximately 25 percent of New Hampshire's high school students drop out, yet few parents or policy makers in New Hampshire seem aware of the magnitude of the problem."

Revisionist History
Speaking about education, the Union Leader quoted Shaheen saying, "I would argue that I'm the only governor who provided leadership on the issue."

Rewriting history won't change the truth behind Jeanne Shaheen's failed promises -- she failed New Hampshire children when given the chance.
